How Age and Date Differences Are Calculated

Age and a date span are different questions. This guide shows which YallaSolve page to use, how exclusive and inclusive days differ, and the leap-day convention.

Quick answer

If the question is “how old on this date,” use age: calendar years, months, and days from a date of birth to a comparison date. If the question is “how far apart are these two dates,” use a date difference: exclusive days (nights between), inclusive days (both calendar dates counted), and a years/months/days span. Do not divide total days by 365 and call that age. Do not report an age when you meant a hotel night count.

YallaSolve keeps those jobs on separate pages. The Age Calculator defaults the comparison date to today and applies a documented leap-day rule. The Date Difference Calculator shows exclusive and inclusive counts and does not clamp leap-day birthdays. A third question starts from one date and a signed count of days or weeks: that is the Date Offset Calculator, not an age and not a span between two dates. This guide is how age and date differences are calculated so you pick the page that matches the sentence you need to defend.

When the question is age

  1. Write the date of birth.
  2. Write the date on which age should be known. On YallaSolve that field starts as today.
  3. Subtract years, months, and days. If days go negative, borrow the previous month’s length. If months go negative, borrow a year and add 12 months.

Born 1 January 2000, age on 1 January 2010 is 10 years, 0 months, 0 days. That is not “3650 days ÷ 365.” Leap days inside the span are already in the calendar months. The Age Calculator will not estimate life expectancy, school grade, or legal adulthood. If the comparison date is before the birth date, it stops.

When the question is a date span

  1. Write the start date and the end date. Neither date has to be a birthday.
  2. Read exclusive days as the count of midnights between the dates. Monday to Tuesday is 1.
  3. Read inclusive days as exclusive + 1. Monday to Tuesday is 2 if you count both dates.
  4. Read the calendar span in years, months, and days when you need a civil breakdown rather than a single integer.

1 January 2024 to 31 January 2024 is 30 exclusive days, 31 inclusive days, and 0 years 0 months 30 days. Same-day start and end is 0 exclusive and 1 inclusive: no nights, one calendar date. Hotel stays, leave requests, and invoice periods disagree about which integer they want. Show both, then pick the one your policy named.

Exclusive versus inclusive days

Exclusive days use the difference of calendar day numbers, not a local midnight timestamp that daylight saving can shift by an hour. Inclusive days always count both ends. If your rule excludes the end date, use exclusive. If your rule counts every date on a flyer (“event runs 1–3 March”), use inclusive. Do not switch names after you see the number you wanted.

When the question is one date plus a count

Two dates are a difference. A birth date and a reference date are an age. One date plus a count is neither. Use the Date Offset Calculator when the sentence is “what date is this many days or weeks from this start?”

  1. Write the start date as YYYY-MM-DD.
  2. Write a whole number. A minus sign subtracts. Zero leaves the start date unchanged.
  3. Choose days or weeks. A week on this page is exactly seven days, so 2 weeks is 14 days.

2026-01-01 plus 1 day is 2026-01-02. The same start plus 1 week is 2026-01-08. 2026-01-01 minus 1 day is 2025-12-31. The calendar is the proleptic Gregorian calendar. The page does not add months, years, business days, or holidays, and it has no time of day and no time zone.

Leap days

A birth date of 29 February is treated as 28 February in a year that has no 29 February. So 29 February 2000 to 28 February 2001 is one year on the Age Calculator. Other sites use 1 March. There is no single civil rule; YallaSolve states 28 February next to the form.

On the Date Difference Calculator, leap days inside a span are included automatically. 1 February 2024 to 1 March 2024 is 29 exclusive days. 1 February 2025 to 1 March 2025 is 28. You do not add the extra day by hand. The date-difference page does not apply the birthday clamp. A span that happens to start on 29 February is just two calendar dates.

Reversed dates and clock times

Age rejects a comparison before birth. Date difference keeps a positive span and says the dates were reversed, so you do not take an absolute value later and forget which inclusive rule you used. Those opposite behaviors are intentional. An age cannot run backwards. A project span can be typed in either order.

Clock times are a third job. 22:15 to 06:45 is a duration, not a date difference and not an age. Use the Time Duration Calculator for that. It wraps overnight when the end is the same as or earlier than the start, up to 24 hours. This guide does not replace that page. If you need both a date span and leftover hours, compute them separately. Do not invent a timezone to glue them together.

Write the result as a labeled sentence: “age 10 years 0 months 0 days,” “30 exclusive days,” or “31 inclusive days.” The label is part of the answer. How age and date differences are calculated is finished when the label and the integer can be checked against the same two dates.
