How to Remove Duplicate Lines and Sort Text

Deduplicating a list keeps the first occurrence. Sorting changes order. This guide shows when to run each step and how YallaSolve compares lines.

Quick answer

To remove duplicate lines and sort text, treat the jobs as a sequence. First make the list unique while keeping first-seen order. Then sort if you need alphabetical or numeric-aware order. Sorting first and unique second still works, but you lose the “first occurrence wins” story unless you unique first. They are not one button.

YallaSolve keeps them on two pages. The Remove Duplicate Lines tool keeps the first time a line appears. The Text Sorter Tool reorders lines and does not drop copies. A combined control would hide which rule you still have.

Deduplicate first

  1. Paste one item per line into Remove Duplicate Lines.
  2. Leave case-sensitive on if “Apple” and “apple” are different values. Turn it off if they should collapse.
  3. Turn on trim if a trailing space should not create a second copy. Turn on drop blank lines if empty rows should vanish instead of being de-duplicated as one blank.
  4. Remove duplicates. The status reports lines kept and lines removed. Survivors stay in first-seen order.

Example with case-sensitive on: apple, Banana, apple, banana, a blank, pear, pear becomes apple, Banana, banana, a blank, pear. The second apple and the second pear go. Banana and banana stay. There is no “keep the last” mode. Soft wrap in the textarea is not a line break.

Then sort if order matters

  1. Copy the unique result into the Text Sorter Tool.
  2. Choose ascending or descending. Leave numeric-aware on so 2 apples comes before 10 pears.
  3. Leave case-sensitive off unless Z must sort apart from z.
  4. Sort. Empty lines are not dropped; a trailing newline is a real empty line and will sort with other empties.

Descending is the reverse of the same compare. It is not a different alphabet. Numeric-aware off lets 10 rise above 2 because the character 1 is less than 2. The sorter does not unique. If you sort a list that still has copies, the copies stay next to each other.

Case, trim, and blanks

Unique and sort do not share a case checkbox meaning. On unique, case-sensitive decides whether two lines are the same value. On sort, case-sensitive decides order, not deletion. Trim exists only on unique. The sorter will happily order apple and apple as two lines. Clean trailing space first if that space is noise.

What these pages will not do

They will not unique a CSV column. A comma is part of the line. They will not skip a header row. If line 1 is a label that also appears later, delete the header yourself. They will not shuffle or sample. Input over 200,000 characters is refused. Pasted markup is text and is not executed.

If the real problem was repeated spaces inside a line, that is the Whitespace Cleaner. If a phrase inside many lines must change, Find and Replace first, then unique. How to remove duplicate lines and sort text is finished when you can say which step changed membership and which step changed order.

Numeric-aware sorting reads digit runs inside the line. item2 and item10 follow the same idea as 2 apples and 10 pears. It will not turn “chapter ten” into 10. If your list mixes bare numbers and spelled numbers, sort will not make them neighbors unless the spelling matches.

A header row is just another line. Unique will keep it if it appears first and drop later copies of the same label. Sort will park it wherever the compare puts those letters. If the export must keep a header on top, take the header off, unique and sort the values, then put the header back. Neither tool has a “header” toggle, because that would hide whether line 1 was a label or a value.

Very wide cells pasted from a spreadsheet are still one line each if they contain no break. Unique then compares the whole cell. That is useful for a single-column export and useless for a three-column row you wanted to unique on column two only. Split the column first, or stay in a spreadsheet. Windows and Unix line breaks are normalized before the unique split so a leftover carriage return does not create a phantom extra line that looks blank in one editor and not in another. If you still see a blank after unique, that blank was a real empty line you chose to keep.
