What this converter does

A data storage converter has to name the multiple. Decimal SI units on this page use 1000: a kilobyte (kB) is 1000 bytes, a megabyte (MB) is 1,000,000 bytes, a gigabyte is 10⁹ bytes, a terabyte is 10¹² bytes. Binary IEC units use 1024: a kibibyte (KiB) is 1024 bytes, a mebibyte (MiB) is 1024² bytes, and so on. A byte is 8 bits. This data storage converter will not treat kB and KiB as the same size. It will not label a 1024-byte block as “KB.”

Drive marketing often uses decimal GB. Operating-system listings often use binary multiples and still print “GB.” That disagreement is why 500 GB on a box is not 500 GiB in a properties panel. This page shows both names. It will not decide which vendor is honest.

This is not a character counter. UTF-8 bytes of a sentence belong on the Character Counter. This page converts storage multiples. It stays out of the length and mass group on purpose.

How to use

  1. Enter the size as a number.
  2. Choose a decimal unit or an IEC unit on each side. Convert or Swap units.
  3. Example loads 1 MB to MiB, which is 1,000,000 ÷ 1,048,576, about 0.953674316406 MiB.

Negative sizes are rejected. Zero is allowed. Empty and non-numeric input fail. Enter converts.

Example

1 MB is 1,000,000 B. 1 MiB is 1,048,576 B. 8 bits is 1 byte. 1 GB is 1000 MB. 1 GiB is 1024 MiB.

1 MB = 1000000 B
1 MiB = 1048576 B
1 MB = 0.953674316406 MiB

Limits

  • No pebibyte, no blocks, no filesystem overhead.
  • Magnitudes above 1e15 are refused.
  • Floating-point display, then trimmed.
  • The conversion stays in this browser.

If a ticket says “GB” and the OS says “GiB,” convert both ways and write both unit names. Pretending they match is how a restore job runs short.

Network people sometimes say Mbps for a bit rate. This page converts a stored size, not a rate over time. A 100 Mbps link is not 100 MB. If you meant megabits, pick Bit and do the 8-to-1 step yourself toward bytes, then up to MB. The page will not silently turn bits into bytes because the labels look alike.

Terabytes and tebibytes exist for the same reason megabytes and mebibytes do: one is 1000⁴ bytes, the other is 1024⁴. The gap grows as the prefix gets larger. That is why a “2 TB” disk and a “2 TiB” file-system report should not be compared as equal. Convert, then write both names. RAM listings are the usual IEC case: 8 GiB is 8 × 1024³ bytes, not 8 × 10⁹. Zero bytes is allowed. A negative size is rejected. Markup in the size field is not a number and does not become a page element. Scientific notation is accepted when it is a real number. Commas in thousands are stripped before the convert. Keyboard users can press Enter from the field or either list. Clear empties the field and hides the result.
