What this converter does

An area converter uses squared length factors. A foot is 0.3048 m, so a square foot is 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 0.09290304 m². Converting 10 feet to meters and then calling that an area is the usual mistake. This area converter keeps the square in the factor. A hectare is 10,000 m². An acre is 43,560 square feet, which is 4046.8564224 m². A square mile uses the international mile squared.

Use this page for a room, a lot, or a map polygon that is already an area. It will not take length × width for you. Measure first, then convert. For a single length, use the Length Converter. For a tank or a bottle, use the Volume Converter, which cubes the length factor and also knows US and Imperial gallons.

How to use

  1. Enter the area as a number.
  2. Choose From and To. Convert or Swap units.
  3. Example loads 1 square meter to square feet.

Negative area is rejected. Zero is allowed. Empty and non-numeric input fail in the status line. Enter converts.

Example

1 m² is about 10.7639104167 ft². 1 acre is 43,560 ft². 1 hectare is 10,000 m², which is about 2.4710538147 acres. 1 km² is 100 hectares.

1 m² = 10.7639104167 ft²
1 ac = 43560 ft²
1 ha = 10000 m²

Limits

  • No circular- mil or township units.
  • Magnitudes above 1e15 are refused.
  • Floating-point display, then trimmed.
  • The conversion stays in this browser.

If you only had a width, convert that on the Length Converter and compute the area yourself. This page will not invent a second side.

Square millimeters and square centimeters are here for small parts and print. Square kilometers and square miles are here for maps. Mixing a city area in km² with a lot size in acres without converting is how two planning documents disagree. A hectare is 100 m by 100 m, which is why it sits cleanly on the metric side.

Real-estate copy sometimes says “meter” when it means square meter. This page will not fix that wording. If the number was a length, convert it as a length first. If it was already an area, stay here. Survey plats that still use an older acre definition are outside this converter. The acre here is 43,560 international square feet, nothing else.

Roofing squares and circular mils are not listed. Adding every trade unit would hide the factors you can check. If your trade uses a named bundle, convert the underlying square feet or square meters instead. A square yard is 9 square feet on these factors, because a yard is 3 feet and the square of 3 is 9. That is the same rule as the square meter: square the length factor, do not reuse the length converter’s result as if it were already an area. Zero area is allowed and stays zero in every unit. A negative lot size is rejected. Scientific notation is accepted when it is a real number. Commas in thousands are stripped before the convert.
