A length converter answers “how long is this” in a different unit. This length converter turns a number and a from-unit into the same distance in a to-unit. It uses one base: the meter. Metric units are exact powers of ten. Inch, foot, yard, and mile use the international yard of 0.9144 m, so an inch is 0.0254 m, a foot is 0.3048 m, and a mile is 1609.344 m. The nautical mile is 1852 m. Those are the definitions this page applies, not a rounded memory.
That last distinction matters. A statute mile and a nautical mile are not the same length. Treating them as close enough is how a chart distance and a road distance get swapped. This page will not silently do that. It also will not apply a US survey foot. If your drawing still uses that older foot, this is the wrong converter.
Use this page for a recipe, a map scale, a product dimension, or a school conversion. Do not treat it as a geodesy tool, a survey calculator, or a unit-aware CAD file. It converts a single number. It does not convert area; that is the Area Converter, which squares the length factor. Speed uses some of the same distance units over time on the Speed Converter.
Keyboard users can tab through the field and lists and press Enter to convert. Each control has a visible label. Negative lengths are rejected. Zero is allowed. Empty input and non-numeric text are errors, not zero.
1 kilometer to miles is 1000 ÷ 1609.344, which is about 0.621371192237 mi. 12 inches to centimeters is 12 × 2.54 = 30.48 cm. 1 nautical mile to kilometers is 1.852 km. If you enter “12 inches” as text instead of 12, the status asks for a number. HTML-looking input is treated as text and rejected the same way.
1 km = 0.621371192237 mi
12 in = 30.48 cm
1 nmi = 1.852 km
If the job was a floor area, leave this page and open the Area Converter. If the job was km/h versus mph, use the Speed Converter. A length converter is finished when the number and both unit names are written down together.
Micrometers and nanometers are here for small parts and print specs. They still use the same meter. A “micron” is the micrometer on this list. The page will not convert astronomical units or light-years. Those would need a different, stated definition and they are not everyday shop units.
Inch, foot, yard, and mile use the international yard (0.9144 m). The nautical mile is 1852 m.
No. A nautical mile is 1852 m. A statute mile is 1609.344 m.
The international foot of 0.3048 m. It does not use the US survey foot.
No. Square units belong on the Area Converter, which squares the length factor.
This page converts a physical length. A signed difference belongs in a different job.
